During a recent visit to monitor active projects, Pyari's board members have identified a new emergency area in Darjeeeling tea estates in North East Bengal. In this region (more specifically in Panighatta, Lohagarh and Lohasingh), tea estates are situated in very isolated areas, on top of the hills. The tea harvesters, principally women and children, are heavily exploited. They work up to 12 hours per day and they are paid only 62 rupies, the equivalent of 1 euro, for 25 kg of tea leaves. This people are illiterates and leave in very poor

conditions in soil's villages where no hygienic services exist (inexistent are toilets and sewage systems, water is taken from the river). The diet supply is poor and very low calorie, the malaria is endemic. The government doesn't offer any hygienic and school service. Women and children are often object of violence and sexual exploitation by men who very often don't work.

Thanks to funds raised, Pyari has decided to support a new hygienic -sanitary project in favour of women and children who work in the more isolated tea estates. The project will bring benefit to around 20.000 people among the local population.

Objectives
Training sanitary workers and start up of a pharmaceutical dispensary in order to:
  • Offer hygienic-sanitary services in favour of women and children which work in tea estates
  • Offer a basic hygienic and health - nutrition education to women and children
  • Offer a basic social education in terms of infant rights and sexual exploitation

Activities
Once reached the above objectives, door to door visits in the villages will take place by the trained operators in order to verify and improve health and nutrition conditions of children and women. Children up to 6 years old and pregnant and nursing women will be offered the primary sanitary services and vaccinations. The worst cases which need ulterior therapies will be addressed to government hospitals.
