Pyari Onlus

Since last winter, Pyari, along with Child in Need, has been working on a new project in North Bengal to help girls in need. Siliguri is town in North Bengal in the north-east of India that borders on Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Though in the grips of poverty, the town is a crucial point for trade, but also for the traffic in women and children. The lure of commerce and employment draws desperately poor people from the outlying regions in the search for a better life. They end up in extensive shanty-towns on the outskirts of Siliguri, living in precarious conditions of health and hygiene, and a prey to abuse and exploitation.

From May 2009 Pyari Onlus decided to help girls living on the streets in Siliguri, and give them a chance to find shelter and aid. It is a short-term shelter where 25 girls can receive food, clothing and psychological support in a safe and friendly environment. There are sports activities and a playground.

In order to help the girls not to get caught up again in the world of abuse and exploitation, the staff try to trace the girls' families so they can return. A stay at the centre can change a young girl's life. They receive medical care and protection. They are encouraged through play and simple activities to trust their carers and to talk about their psychological, social or sexual problems. There is regular instruction about the prevention of AIDS and other diseases, and general advice about personal hygiene. When it is impossible to trace the girls' families, an organization is found which can help them and, above all, give them long-term training.

Many are the sad stories we have come across. Rita, for example, an eight-year-old girl, who was one of the first to come to the shelter home. She was taken away from her home to work for a family in Sikkim in north-eastern India as a household help. From 4 o'clock in the morning till 11 at night, every day. No time off at all. One meal a day. She was beaten regularly by her employers, who

found she was too slow, or perhaps when she broke a cup or a glass. In the end, when she just couldn't stand it any more, she ran away, went to the police and told them her story. They brought her to us in Siliguri shelter, where she stayed, got regular meals, new shoes and clothing, and comfort and help with her disturbed state of mind. Meantime, we traced her family, and her father came to take her home. Rita came to us starving and desperate, and left a happy child with a home of her own to go to.
