Pyari's Shelter Home offers to street girls aged between 2 and 18 years a safe environment and protection from exploitation and abuses. Moreover it provides them with all basis needs: health assistance, food, clothing, education and the possibility of learning a job.
The opportunity for them achieve autonomy, a proper place in society, a better future and a dignified life.

Young girls are supported on a continuous basis with weekly individual and group meetings. We help them to channel their energies in a positive manner and to overcome their social and psychological problems through recreational and therapeutic activities.

Life at the Shelter Home
In the Shelter Home, we meet the basic needs of children like food, clothing and health care. Every child is given two sets of clothes and undergarments. A nutritious diet is followed every week, which provides children good combinated food required for their physical growth.

Every new girl follows a regular health check up for preventive health care and basic treatment.

Counselling is being provided on a regular basis including play therapy and alternative methods of communication (role plays for example) so that there is scope for the girls to discuss social, psychological and sexual problems that they have faced or are likely to face. We also extend drawing classes to the children, which helps the counselor/ home superintendent to understand their mental health and work towards an approach for each one of them. It was seen that the drawing classes help children to channelize their energy in a positive way.

Girls follow a routine on a daily basis, which is planned in such a way that it touches upon the educational, prevocational and recreational needs of the child. Most of the girls received had never been to school. Through bridge course methodology we provided these children with basic education that enabled them to identify letters, read and write as well. Subsequently arrangements are being made for children to be enrolled into boarding schools Additionally, the shelter home also has a small library, indoor games, outdoor games, music and dance, which the children enjoy in the afternoon. We also extend drawing and painting classes to children. Creativity classes like

art, music, dance are held; drama enable children to have an outlet for expressing their talents and thus being developing into more confident individuals.

The shelter home also provides prevocational training to the girls, at present we are giving them training in tailoring and weaving crystal/bead bags. The girls have picked up the basic techniques of tailoring and often experiment with spare clothes.

Small discussions are held with girls on fortnightly basis on health issues, child rights, child abuse and life skill education. The objective of these discussions is to enable

these children to conceptualize, and handle issues related to child protection by using effective ways of communication and empower them with the right information so that they are able to recognize and report abuse not just for themselves but also among other children in their communities. Also we offer to adolescents information on sexual infections and HIV prevention.

Children celebrate special occasions like teacher's day, children's day, independence day, etc with their teachers and children from our other projects, which give them a sense of belonging and an opportunity to re-integrate into the larger society.
