The home will be located in West Bengal near the rural district of Purulia. The actual site is in Balarampur, a village consisting of approximately 10,000 inhabitants 30km from Purulia and 200km from Kolkata.
Balarmpur is on a provincial road which is connected by railway to Kolkata and the state of Bihar.
Balarampur is an ideal site for the project for the following reasons:
- The rural setting provides a safe environment protected from the violence, overcrowding and anonymity of the city;
- The relative distance from Kolkata facilitates both a geographic and psychological distance for the girls from their previous life;
- It has been widely demonstrated that smaller communities are more sensitive and accepting towards disadvantaged groups;
- The area is well known to the founders of the project;
- Local collaborators have already been working in the same area in social and health programs for many years and are therefore well known and appreciated by the community and local authorities.
These elements will ensure that appropriate local staff are recruited and acceptance of the project by the local community (who potentially will benefit both socially and economically from the project).
