India has a population of 1,103,596,000 whose average age is 24 years old. Illiteracy rates in West Bengal are 68.6% , for women 59.6%. In the last few years, the number of girls who have abandoned school before reaching age seven has grown by approximately 2 million a year. Despite India's impressive economic growth, poverty is still a fundamental problem: nearly 45% of the population (72% of whom live in rural areas) or 450 million people, live below the poverty line. Another 40% live in precarious conditions. More than 20% (200 million people) suffer from chronic malnutrition.
Kolkata
Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal (north-east India) whose name was officially changed in 2001 to it's previous name of Calcutta. The city's population consists of approximately 18 million people the majority of whom live in the streets or in slums. According to the 2001 census, 77.68% of the population are Hindu, 20.27% are Muslim and 0.88% are Christian. A constant influx of migrants from neighboring Bangladesh flows into Kolkata without respite. Despite India's impressive economic growth, evidenced by the number of luxury skyscrapers and urban residential areas being constructed, there is a persistent level of poverty and degradation that are often hidden or ignored by local authorities.
